Vulcans blank Edinboro, advance to final

EDINBORO, Pa. (Nov. 20) – The Vulcans will be playing in their fifth-straight NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship following a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 28-26, 28-26) of second-seeded Edinboro on Saturday night at McComb Fieldhouse.

With the win, the third-seeded California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 23-12 overall this season. Meanwhile, Edinboro finishes the season with a 30-6 mark – its first 30-win season since 1990. The Fighting Scots had previously won each of the three meetings against the Vulcans this season by a combined score of 9-2.

Sophomore Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) again led the Vulcans with 13 kills while hitting at a .385 clip. Classmates Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished 12 and 11 kills, respectively, with Franz boasting a team-best .455 hitting percentage. Junior setter Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) engineered the offense against Edinboro with 30 assists.

Senior Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) collected 14 digs, while Eshleman and freshman Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) each added seven digs. Fromknecht and fellow sophomore Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) led the Vulcans at the net with five blocks (all assisted) each.

Cal U will face Clarion, the top seed and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Champion, in the Atlantic Regional Championship tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m. The Golden Eagles won both regular-season meetings against the Vulcans, including a 3-2 victory in Clarion on Oct. 23.
