CAL U NOTES
• Cal U will make its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs after posting a 10-1 record in the regular season. Bloomsburg is making its second post-season appearance in three years and has won nine of its last 10 games with the only loss coming last weekend in the PSAC Championship.

• Senior quarterback #Josh Portis# tied his career high with five touchdown passes on Saturday, as Cal U closed the regular season with a 57-6 victory against Cheyney. Portis finished with 210 passing yards while completing 14-of-22 passes with five scores, including a career-best three to junior wide receiver #Chedrick Cherry#. Defensively, sophomore safety #Rontez Miles# led the team with eight tackles and a career-high 4.5 TFL, while junior linebacker #Brett Diamond# and redshirt freshman defensive lineman #BJ Stevens# each finished with six tackles.

• The Vulcans and Huskies are meeting for the sixth time in five years and the 23rd time overall. Bloomsburg has won six of the last eight meetings against Cal U, however, the Vulcans earned a 27-24 road victory in the 2008 NCAA Playoffs.

• In his 18th season as head coach of the Huskies, Danny Hale is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 144-49-1 record. He has led Bloomsburg to 11 outright or shared PSAC East titles and seven NCAA post-season playoff berths. Since 2000, Bloomsburg is one of the most successful NCAA Division II programs with a combined record of 101-27 (.789).

• Bloomsburg reclaimed the top spot in the PSAC East this season behind the play of 14 All-PSAC selections, including Defensive Player of the Year Mike Varanavage and Freshman of the Year Franklyn Quiteh. Bloomsburg boasts the top-ranked total (441.0 yards/game) and rushing (267.5 yards/game) offenses in the PSAC in large part to the success of Quiteh, a regional Harlon Hill candidate. He leads NCAA Division II with 158.4 rushing yards per game and his 1,742 rushing yards this season ranks 10th in PSAC single-season history. Junior Pat Carey has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the PSAC with 22 touchdowns and only seven interceptions in 211 attempts. Senior tight end Ben Weaber has been Carey's favorite target this season, leading the team with 28 receptions and six touchdowns. The Huskies' defense also ranks among the league leaders by allowing just 20.2 points and 292.4 yards of total offense/game. Varanavage leads the team and ranks eighth in the PSAC with 78 tackles (42 solo) and 8.5 TFL, while fellow linebacker Jarrett Pidgeon has registered 62 stops (33 solo). Junior cornerback Vince Browning leads Bloomsburg with four interceptions after making two last season. On special teams, the Huskies boast perhaps the most accurate kicker in the PSAC as freshman Dan Fisher has made a league-high 20 field goals.

• The Vulcans and Huskies share six common opponents this season with both teams posting a 5-1 record against those teams. The only loss among the six games for both Cal U and Bloomsburg was at Mercyhurst. The Vulcans suffered a 31-21 loss to the Lakers on Oct. 23, while the Huskies dropped the PSAC Championship to Mercyhurst last weekend, 56-37.

• Cal U has won 12 of its last 13 games in November since the start of the 2007 season. In the previous decade from 1997-2006, the Vulcans struggled down the stretch of the season by posting only a 6-14 record (.300).

• Cal U has won 62 of its last 73 games (.849) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have won all six NCAA Playoff games they have played in November, including three victories at Adamson Stadium by an average of over 35 points.

• The Vulcans feature a special group of 21 seniors in 2010. The class has collectively posted a 46-8 overall record (.852) over the last four years and an unbelievable 26-1 mark (.963) in PSAC West games. The 46 wins are the most in Cal U history, breaking the record of 44 victories set by last year's seniors.

• The series between Cal U and Bloomsburg has featured several close games, as four of the last five games have been decided by single digits. In last year's contest, the Huskies scored the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in the game, 17-10.

• In the last four weeks, junior linebacker #Brett Diamond# has registered a combined 33 tackles after making only 26 tackles in the first seven weeks. A two-time All-PSAC West honoree, the Virginia native leads the team with 59 stops (28 solo) and also is among the team leaders with 8.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks. In three years as a starter, Diamond is the team's active leader with 166 career tackles (90 solo).

• With its win at Edinboro two weeks ago, Cal U secured a share of the 2010 PSAC West title with Mercyhurst. The Vulcans have now earned at least a share of six-straight (three outright) divisional crowns, dating back to 2005. Cal U joins West Chester (1969-74) as the only PSAC schools to ever accomplish the feat.

• Senior center #Nick Piccirillo# has established himself as one of the most durable players in school history. Since starting as a true freshman for the Vulcans in 2007, he has made 50-consecutive starts. The school record for consecutive and total starts in a career was set last year by defensive lineman #Willie Walker# at 54 games. In each of the last three seasons, Piccirillo has been selected to the All-PSAC West Second-Team.

• In only two years with the program, quarterback #Josh Portis# has established himself as one of the top signal callers in school history. A two-time All-PSAC West selection, he moved past Hall of Famer Sam Mannery (1987-90) last week for second place all-time with 66 passing touchdowns, only one shy of the record held by Joe Ruggiero (2004-07). Portis enters the weekend on pace to become only the fourth quarterback in school history with 6,000 career passing yards.

• Cal U and Bloomsburg each featured a PSAC-best 14 players on the All-PSAC West and East squads, respectively. The Vulcans placed a staggering 10 players on the All-PSAC West First-Team and the Huskies had a whopping nine selections on the All-PSAC East First-Team.

• In only his second year with the program, senior kicker #Marc Domonkos# broke the all-time school record for PAT kicks last week. He enters this weekend ranked second in program history with 160 career points, trailing only the record of 189 set by Tyler Lorenz (2006-07). Domonkos, an All-PSAC West Second-Team selection, trails Lorenz's single-season PAT record of 54 points by only seven kicks.

• The Huskies and Vulcans rank 1-2 in the PSAC and are among the Top 15 in the country in turnover margin. Bloomsburg has registered a league-best 30 takeaways, while Cal U has committed a league-low 14 turnovers.

• The Vulcans and Huskies each have benefited from the play of impact freshmen in 2010. Cal U defensive lineman #Darnell Harding# was selected the PSAC West Freshman of the Year on Wednesday after leading the team with 5.0 sacks and ranking second with 9.0 TFL. Bloomsburg running back Franklyn Quiteh was named PSAC East Freshman of the Year after leading the nation with 158.4 rushing yards and rushing for 19 touchdowns.
