Senior Day
CALIFORNIA (Nov. 13) – Senior quarterback and Harlon Hill candidate
Josh Portis (Woodland Hills, Calif./William H. Taft/Maryland) tied his career high with five touchdown passes on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 10 Vulcans closed the regular season with a 57-6 victory against Cheyney at Adamson Stadium.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania football team moves to 10-1 on the year – marking the fourth-straight season with double-digit victories. The Vulcans, who were seeded fifth in the latest NCAA regional rankings, will find out their post-season fate tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 14, during the NCAA Division II Selection Show on ESPNews (Ch. 465 Armstrong/Ch. 102 Comcast/Ch. 29 Atlantic Broadband) at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, Cheyney finishes the year with a 1-10 overall record.
Portis finished the game with 210 passing yards while completing 14-of-22 passes with five touchdowns and one interception. The second-year starter now ranks second all-time in school history with 66 touchdown passes, only one score behind the record of 67 set by
Joe Ruggiero (2004-07). He also moved past Hall of Famer
Jeff Petrucci (1966-68) for fourth place with 6,303 yards of total offense. Portis now leads the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) this season with a 160.8 passing efficiency and ranks second in the league with 30 touchdown passes.
Junior wide receiver
Chedrick Cherry (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) set a career high with three touchdowns and posted his third 100-yard game of the season. He led all players with six receptions for 105 yards and three scores (11, 31, 32). The 5-11 junior leads the Vulcans this season with 48 receptions after entering the year with 33 career catches.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter after scoring on each of their first three drives. On the game's opening possession, Portis found Cherry for an 11-yard touchdown with 10:56 left in the first quarter. After a 20-yard field goal by senior kicker
Marc Domonkos (Johnstown, Pa./Bishop McCort/Lock Haven) on its second drive, Cal U expanded its lead to 17-0 when Portis connected with senior wide receiver
Terrance Moore (Key West, Fla./Key West/Mesa C.C.) for a 29-yard score with 2:25 left.
Midway through the second quarter, Portis found junior wide receiver
Derrick Jones (Lynwood, Calif./Long Beach Poly) for a 10-yard touchdown with 7:40 remaining before halftime. Cheyney looked to score on its final drive of the first half before defensive lineman
Luqman Abdallah (Princeton, N.J./Trenton Central/Hofstra) registered a sack of quarterback Chris Anderson at the Vulcans' 19-yard line as time expired. In the first half, the Vulcans yielded only 73 yards of total offense with 44 yards coming on a run by Marcus Jones in the closing moments of the second quarter.
Cheyney avoided the shutout by scoring on the first drive of the third quarter before Cal U countered with a 22-yard field goal by Domonkos with 7:22 left in the quarter. The Vulcans forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and registered a safety when the Wolves' punter tossed a bad snap out of the back of the end zone.
Portis then found Cherry for back-to-back touchdowns (31, 32) to stretch the lead to 43-6 with 2:49 remaining in the third quarter. After the Wolves failed to gain a yard on their next drive, true freshman
Trey Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown with 1:32 left in the quarter, 50-6.
The Vulcans added their final score of the game when junior defensive back
Eric Livsey (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) returned his first career interception 28 yards for a touchdown, 57-6, with 5:18 remaining in the game.
Defensively, sophomore
Rontez Miles (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) led the team with eight tackles and a career-high 4.5 tackles for loss (TFL). Senior linebacker
Anthony Roberts (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Phillipsburg/Iowa Central C.C.) added seven stops (two solo), while junior linebacker
Brett Diamond (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and redshirt freshman defensive lineman
BJ Stevens (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) each finished with six tackles.
Cal U has made the NCAA Playoffs in each of the last three seasons, advancing to the NCAA Semifinals each time. Last year, the Vulcans went 3-1 in the post-season after earning the third seed in Super Regional One.
