CAL U NOTES
• Cal U concludes the regular season this weekend when it hosts Cheyney for Senior Day. Last week, the Vulcans scored touchdowns on three-straight possessions to claim a 24-0 win at Edinboro. Meanwhile, Cheyney suffered a 63-28 loss to C.W. Post in the final week of divisional play.
• Senior quarterback #
Josh Portis# threw three second-half touchdowns and the defense allowed only 79 yards of total offense, as the No. 12 Vulcans earned a 24-0 shutout at Edinboro. Portis finished the game with 240 passing yards and three scores with no interceptions, while completing 17-of-27 attempts. Defensively, Cal U forced Edinboro into a season-low minus-4 yards on 21 attempts behind five sacks. Junior #
Brett Diamond# and senior #
Sam Fikaris# each collected seven tackles with Fikaris registering 3.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks.
• In his second stint as a coach at Cheyney,
Jeff Braxton holds a 1-31 record in nearly three full seasons as the head coach of the Wolves. He guided Cheyney to its first win since 2007 on Oct. 2 against Millersville, snapping a then-NCAA long 32-game losing streak. A former player at NCAA Division III Salisbury, Braxton has also been as assistant coach at several schools, including Delaware State, Hofstra and Tennessee State.
• Cheyney returns 37 lettermen and 16 starters from last year's team that finished winless for the 14th time in last 20 years (0-11). Despite only having one win this season, the Wolves are one of the top rushing offenses in the PSAC led by redshirt freshman running back
Marcus Jones. He ranks sixth in the league with 99.1 rushing yards per game and averages 5.5 yards per carry. Senior wide receiver
John Newman is one of the most versatile players in the league, averaging 116.7 all-purpose yards per game. He has totaled 1,167 all-purpose yards this season after having over 600 yards on kick returns and 550 combined rushing and receiving yards. Sophomore linebacker
Thomas Stewart leads the team and ranks eighth in the PSAC with 8.2 tackles per game (74 total; 52 solo). Junior defensive lineman
Tim Hume has developed into one of the premier pass rushers this season, collecting 8.5 sacks this season. Despite Newman being among the league's top kick returners, the Wolves rank either last or next-to-last in punting, kickoff coverage and kick and punt return average.
• After redshirting last season, sophomore defensive back #
Scott Wallace# has appeared in all 10 games this year in the secondary and on special teams. A former quarterback at Massachusetts, he made four tackles (two solo) and a pair of interceptions last week at Edinboro in his first college start. For the season, he has made seven stops (three solo) and is tied for second on the team with three interceptions.
• Cal U has won 11 of its last 12 games in November since the start of the 2007 season. In the previous decade from 1997-2006, the Vulcans struggled down the stretch of the season by posting only a 6-14 record (.300).
• Cal U has won 61 of its last 72 games (.847) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 41-5 (.891) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.
• A four-year stalwart on the defensive tackle, #
Sam Fikaris# has registered a combined 6.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks in the last two weeks. Against Edinboro, he led the team with seven tackles (two solo) and set career highs with 3.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks. For the season, the Ohio native has made 26 tackles (13 solo) and already established career highs with 9.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks.
• The Vulcans feature a special group of 21 seniors in 2010. The class has collectively posted a 45-8 overall record (.849) over the last four years and an unbelievable 26-1 mark (.963) in PSAC West games. The 45 wins are the most in Cal U history, breaking the record of 44 victories set by last year's seniors. Combined, the 2010 seniors have started an astounding 321 career games.
• In the last three weeks, junior linebacker #
Brett Diamond# has registered a combined 27 tackles after making only 26 tackles in the first seven weeks. An All-PSAC West selection last year, the Virginia native ranks second on the team with 53 stops (24 solo) and also is among the team leaders with 8.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks. In three years as a starter, Diamond is the team's active leader with 160 career tackles (86 solo) and also has five career interceptions.
• With its win last weekend, Cal U secured a share of the 2010 PSAC West title with Mercyhurst. The Vulcans have now earned at least a share of six-straight (three outright) divisional crowns, dating back to 2005. Cal U joins West Chester (1969-74) as the only PSAC schools to ever accomplish the feat.
• Senior center #
Nick Piccirillo# has established himself as one of the most durable players in school history. Since starting as a true freshman for the Vulcans in 2007, he has made 49-consecutive starts. The school record for consecutive and total starts in a career was set last year by defensive lineman #
Willie Walker# at 54 games. In each of the last two seasons, Piccirillo has been selected to the All-PSAC West Second-Team.
• In only two years with the program, quarterback #
Josh Portis# has established himself as one of the top signal callers in school history. Last week, he moved passed Hall of Famer
Jeff Petrucci (1966-68) for fourth place all-time with 5,562 passing yards. He enters this weekend with 61 career touchdowns, only three behind Hall of Famer
Sam Mannery (1987-90) for second place. Portis is the first quarterback in school history to pass for at least 25 touchdowns twice in a career. Last season, he set single-season record with 3,421 passing yards and 36 touchdown passes.
• The Vulcans lead the PSAC and rank third in NCAA Division II in rushing defense, yielding just 65.8 yards per game. Cal U is allowing a stout 2.2 yards per attempt and has twice forced opponents into negative rushing yards (Lock Haven, Edinboro) via sacks. Through 10 games, the Vulcans have allowed only two 100-yard rushers with no player gaining more than 115 yards on the ground.
• Wide receiver #
Mike Williams# has proven to be a key playmaker in recent weeks. Last week at Edinboro, the Hershey native set career highs with five receptions and 94 yards. For the season, Williams leads the team with 20.7 yards per catch on 12 receptions with nine catches in the last two games.
• Senior kicker #
Marc Domonkos# is within reach of breaking the career school record for PAT attempts. He enters this weekend only three PAT kicks shy of tying the record of 93 set by
Tyler Lorenz (2006-07). Domonkos also ranks third all-time with 137 kick points and 19 field goals in only two seasons with the Vulcans. Lorenz also holds both of those record at 189 points and 32 field goals.
• The Vulcans are second in the PSAC and ninth in the nation in turnover margin. Cal U is tied for second in the league with 17 interceptions this season.
