CALIFORNIA (Oct. 6) – The No. 5 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team used a goal from junior
Sara Di Benedetto (Maple, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic) to earn a 1-0 victory Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at a rainy Roadman Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Vulcans improve to 11-0-1 on the season and 7-0-1 in conference action. With 22 points in league play, Cal U maintains first place in the conference standings. Bloomsburg falls to 5-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the PSAC. The Huskies have posted 13 points in PSAC action, putting them in a tie for seventh place in the standings.
At intermission neither team had scored despite Cal U holding a commanding 10-2 advantage on shots. However, 13 minutes into the second half, Di Benedetto was able to beat Bloomsburg keeper Frances Nicoletti for her second goal of the season. Senior
Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) and freshman
Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) added the helpers, the eighth of the season for both players.
For the game, the Vulcans posted a 22-7 advantages on shots. This marked the 12th straight contest in which Cal U has posted more shots then the competition, while out-shooting opponents by a 311-82 margin on the season.
Reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) was strong in goal again for the Vulcans, making four saves on the afternoon. She posted her eighth shutout of the season and improved her record to 11-0-1. The junior goalkeeper has not allowed a goal over the last 287 minutes and 37 seconds, stretching over four games and dating back to a late-game goal by Lock Haven on Sept. 25.
