WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 6) – In a meeting of two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region, the Vulcans claimed a 3-2 comeback victory (30-28, 14-25, 18-25, 25-13, 15-10) against Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday night.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 11-7 overall after winning its last four matches. Meanwhile, Wheeling Jesuit drops to 17-4 overall this season. The Vulcans have defeated the Cardinals in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments, including the Atlantic Regional Championship match in 2008.
Sophomore outside hitter
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) collected a team-high 14 kills, while classmate
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) tallied 13 kills while hitting at a .346 clip. Fellow sophomores
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) added 11 and eight kills, respectively.
As a team, the Vulcans registered 16 blocks on Wednesday. Fromknecht led the team with seven blocks (three solo), while Franz, Harris and Wilson each added five blocks.
Senior
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) anchored the defensive effort with 15 digs, while junior
Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) finished with 10 digs. Junior setter
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) recorded an impressive line of 49 assists, seven kills and seven digs against the Cardinals.
Cal U returns to conference play this weekend when it faces West Chester, Cheyney and Kutztown at Slippery Rock, Pa., on Oct. 8-9.
