Men's Soccer earns shutout at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 28) – The Vulcans extended their late-season win streak to four games on Thursday afternoon after earning a pivotal 2-0 in-region win over Seton Hill in non-conference action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 11-4-2 overall with one game remaining in the regular season. The Vulcans entered the week ranked third in the NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings despite having been eliminated from Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament contention. The upcoming NCAA Tournament will feature four teams from the Atlantic region. Meanwhile, Seton Hill falls to 4-10-3 this season.

Cal U took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when junior Mike Kalas (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) scored on a header following a corner kick by senior Spencer Crider (Orrstown, Pa./Chambersburg). Kalas has now scored all three of his goals this season in the last two weeks. The Vulcans dominated possession in the first period, out-shooting the Griffins by an 11-1 margin during that stretch.

The Vulcans added an insurance goal in the closing minutes at the 84:18-mark when freshman Russell Bootwright (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) tallied his team-leading seventh goal of the year off feeds from classmate Scott Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and junior Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford).

Senior goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) tied his career high with his 11th shutout of the season, collecting three saves in 90 minutes. Meanwhile, Seton Hill junior Jon DeLuca registered six saves in the loss.

For the game, Cal U held a 16-6 advantage in shots after each team attempted five shots in the second period. The Vulcans also maintained a sizeable 10-2 edge in corner kicks on Thursday.
