CAL U NOTES
• Cal U will host rival IUP in the second-annual Coal Bowl this weekend following a 31-21 upset loss at Mercyhurst last Saturday. The Vulcans are now tied with the Lakers for the first place in the PSAC West standings. Meanwhile, IUP has lost its last three games after suffering a 45-17 loss at Gannon last weekend.

• After committing four turnovers and allowing 17-straight points in the second half, then-No. 3 Cal U dropped a 31-21 contest at Mercyhurst last weekend. In his first career start, freshman #Trey Johnson# rushed for 122 yards on 19 carries (116 in the first half). Senior quarterback #Josh Portis# posted 212 passing yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted twice and sacked four times. Junior linebacker #Brett Diamond# led the defense with a career-high 10 tackles. The loss snapped a 24-divisional winning streak by the Vulcans.

• The Vulcans and Crimson Hawks are meeting for the 83rd time this weekend in the second-annual Coal Bowl. Cal U has won four of the last five games against IUP after the Crimson Hawks won 20-consecutive meetings (1985-04).

• In his fifth year as head coach of the Crimson Hawks, Lou Tepper has guided the program to a 34-17 record after posting his first losing season at IUP last year. Tepper previously was the head coach at Edinboro from 2002-05 after guiding Illinois from 1991-96. While with the Fighting Scots, he posted a 40-26 mark in six years with a pair of nine-win seasons and NCAA post-season berths. During the early 1990s, he was the head coach of the Fighting Illini in three bowl games.

• IUP returns 26 lettermen and 14 starters from last year's team that finished below .500 for the first time since 1982. The Crimson Hawks feature one of the top rushing offenses in the PSAC behind the play of first-year starter Harvie Tuck. After rushing for over 500 yards as a freshman last season, Tuck leads the team with 700 yards on over 150 carries this season. Junior Bo Napoleon has taken over at quarterback since a Week 2 injury to Pat Smith and has completed less than 50 percent of his passes and been intercepted 12 times this year. IUP returns an All-PSAC West wide receiver from last year in senior Mychal Skinner, who leads the team in all three major receiving categories. The strength of IUP this season has been its defense, which ranks fourth in the league in total defense. Sophomore defensive lineman Carl Thornton, an All-PSAC West selection last season, leads the team with 46 tackles (27 solo), 8.5 TFL and 4.0 sacks. After being an all-conference running back in 2010, senior Tobias Robinson has shifted to defensive back this year and registered 24 tackles (17 solo) with an interception return for a touchdown. On special teams, IUP features the reliable Craig Burgess, at kicker. As a senior, he leads the PSAC with 14 field goals and is fourth in kick scoring with 56 points. Robinson has also made an impact as the primary returner in 2010, averaging a league-high 28.1 yards per return.

• In the process of winning five-straight PSAC West titles, Cal U had established a pair of lengthy streaks that were snapped with last weekend's loss at Mercyhurst. Prior to last Saturday, the Vulcans had won their last 17 games on the road against PSAC West opponents, a streak that dated back to Oct. 1, 2005. Since the start of 2007, Cal U had won 24-consecutive games in PSAC West play by an average of 25.7 points. The Vulcans look to continue their 12-game home winning streak in divisional action this weekend when they host IUP, who was the last league team to win at Adamson Stadium on Nov. 11, 2006.

• True freshman #Trey Johnson# continues to make a sizeable impact for the Vulcans in 2010. Standing only 5-7, Johnson rushed for 122 yards on 19 carries last week in his first career start. He is the first true freshman to rush for 100 yards in the Coach Luckhardt era (since 2002). The former Rochester standout is the ninth different player overall to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2002.

• This weekend's game features a rare meeting of former NCAA Division I head coaches in IUP's Lou Tepper and Cal U's #Walt Harris# (offensive coordinator). Tepper was the head coach at Illinois, while Harris had stints at Pacific, Pitt and Stanford. This weekend marks the first meeting between the two coaches since 1996 when Harris was the quarterbacks coach at Ohio State and Tepper was the head coach of the Fighting Illini. In that meeting, the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes posted a 48-0 victory at Illinois en route to winning the Big Ten.

• In only two seasons with the program, senior #Terrance Moore# has proven to be one of the elite receivers in school history. He ranks among the all-time leaders with 18 receiving touchdowns and is within reach of becoming the sixth player with 2,000 receiving yards in a career. Last week, he posted his fourth career 100-yard game, finishing with 152 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions.

• Cal U has won 59 of its last 70 games (.843) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 39-5 (.886) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.

• Senior #Marc Domonkos# has become one of the most prolific kickers in school history despite playing only two seasons with the Vulcans. After his performance last weekend, he is tied for second all-time with 86 career PAT made and is tied for third in career kick scoring at 137 points. Domonkos is on pace to break the PAT record of 93 set by Tyler Lorenz (2006-07).

• Sophomore running back #Lamont Smith# is on pace to become the fourth different Vulcan to rush for 1,000 yards in the last seven years. Currently, he ranks second in the PSAC with 964 rushing yards and third with 12 rushing touchdowns. Since 2002, Antoine Bagwell was the fastest player to reach 1,000-yard mark, surpassing the mark in Week 6 during the 2004 season.

• Since the start of the 2005 season, the Vulcans have posted a 10-2 mark in games following a loss. The only back-to-back losses during the span were the 2008 NCAA Semifinals into the start of last season (Minnesota Duluth - 12/6/08; Saginaw Valley 8/27/09; Bloomsburg 9/5/09). The three-game losing streak was followed by a seven-game winning streak and an eventual berth into the NCAA Playoffs.

• After using the same starting offensive lineman at the same five spots in the first six weeks, the Vulcans have featured a different left tackle in each of the last two games. Senior #Robert Eberlein# made his first career start last week at Mercyhurst after sophomore transfer #Tim Farley# received the nod against Slippery Rock. Since starting the first six weeks of the season at left tackle, sophomore #Eric Kush# has missed the last two games due to injury. However, behind seniors #Dan Jordan# and #Nick Piccirillo#, the Vulcans feature a combined 152 starts on the offensive line.

• Cal U has played a trio of true freshman in 2010, all of who have seen significant game action. With injuries in the backfield, #RJ Thomas# has started the last four contests at fullback. Thomas was joined in the backfield last weekend by #Trey Johnson#, who was making his first career start after serving as the team's primary punt returner. Following an early injury in the secondary at Mercyhurst last Saturday, freshman defensive back #Jeff Parrish# saw his most significant action of the season and ranked second on the team with eight tackles (four solo).

• After being picked off twice last week, senior #Josh Portis# has thrown two interceptions in a game four times in his career and Cal U is 2-2 in those games.
