No. 12 Cal U edges Clarion on the road, 1-0

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 23) – Behind a late goal by freshman Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford), the No. 13 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team defeated Clarion, 1-0, on Saturday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match-up.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 15-1-1 overall and 11-1-1 in league action. The win gives the Vulcans 34 points in league play which keeps them in second place behind conference-leading West Chester. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-7-4 overall and 4-5-3 in the PSAC, which is four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot.

Smyda's goal came on a header late in the second-half at the 84:32-mark came off of an assist by junior Sara Di Benedetto (Maple, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic). The goal was the freshman's team-leading 15th of the season and for the year she now has totaled 40 points.

For the game, the Vulcans out-shot the Golden Eagles by a count of 24-4 and held an 8-1 edge on corner kicks. Junior Erin Feltz (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) led the Cal U offense with five shots.

Goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) made four saves to improve her record to 15-1-1 this season. The shutout gives the junior nine in 2010, which is three off the school record of 12 that she set last season. Jackson has only allowed six goals in over 1,500 minutes of action in net this season.

The Vulcans wrap-up the regular season in one week, Saturday Oct. 30, when they travel to face Shippensburg for a 3 p.m. PSAC match-up.
