CALIFORNIA (Oct. 19) – Sophomore
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) scored her third career game-winning goal in the 76th minute to lead the Vulcans to a 2-1 victory over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Tuesday afternoon at Roadman Park.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 14-1-1 on the season and 10-1-1 in conference play giving them 31 points and moving them back in to first place over idle West Chester. Edinboro drops to 8-5-1 overall and 5-5-1 in league action.
The Fighting Scots struck first, scoring 7:36 in to the game when sophomore Karisa Fernandez beat Cal U junior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) putting the visitors ahead early. The Vulcans tallied the equalizer just under 19 minutes later when junior defender
Elizabeth Johnston (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) scored on a header off of a corner kick by sophomore
Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). The two teams went in to halftime tied at 1-1 with Cal U holding an 11-4 edge on shots.
At the 76:48-mark, Work netted her fifth goal of the season off assists from senior
Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) and freshman
Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) putting the Vulcans on top for good.
Jackson recorded two saves on the day en route to winning her 32nd career game. The early goal by Edinboro was only the sixth allowed this season by the junior.
The Vulcans wrap up the season with two games on the road, the first of which is Saturday, Oct. 23, when they travel to Clarion to take on the Golden Eagles for a 7 p.m. PSAC match-up.
