CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium for Homecoming this weekend after posting a 34-7 victory at Gannon last Saturday. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock upset then-nationally-ranked Edinboro 28-14 after scoring 21-unanswered points in the second half at home in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
• Senior quarterback #
Josh Portis# passed for a season-high 328 yards and three touchdowns, as No. 4 Cal U earned a 34-7 victory at Gannon. Portis finished the game with his fourth career 300-yard performance, completing 24-of-34 attempts. Sophomore #
Lamont Smith# finished with 200 yards from scrimmage after nearly having 100 yards rushing and receiving. For the third-straight game, the Vulcans limited an opponent to single digits. Cal U forced Gannon into season lows with 35 rushing yards, 126 yards of total offense and eight first downs.
• Slippery Rock leads the all-time series that started in 1919 by a 42-27-3 margin. The Vulcans have won six of the last seven meetings against The Rock after Slippery Rock won seven-straight games from 1996-02.
• Following a 12-year career as an assistant coach at Slippery Rock,
Dr. George Mihalik is in his 23rd year as head coach of The Rock. He is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 152-91-4 overall record and guided his alma mater to three-straight NCAA Playoff appearances from 1997-99. While a player, he earned three letters and was the quarterback in the 1972 and 1973 PSAC Championships.
• Slippery Rock returns 27 lettermen and 15 starters from last year's team that tied for fourth place in the final PSAC West standings. After being picked sixth in the preseason coaches' poll, The Rock has posted an impressive 5-1 overall record and 2-1 league mark. Anchoring the turnaround has been the play of sophomore running back
Akeem Satterfield, who ranks second in the conference with 737 yards and 11 touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback
Ryan Sabo has played effectively, throwing only three interceptions on 127 attempts. Over half of his completions and yards this year have been to junior wide receiver
Devin Goda, who leads the conference with 40 receptions and is sixth with 476 yards. Defensively, junior linebacker
Zach Sheridan leads the team and is fourth in the league with 53 tackles (24 solo) after earning All-PSAC West honors last year. Senior defensive back
Robert Doiley has collected two of the team's five interceptions after making three picks last year. On special teams, Doiley ranks second in the PSAC with an average of 16.2 yards per punt return. Over the last two games, junior kicker
Kurt Brackman has filled in for veteran
C.J. Bahr.
• Cal U continues to defend its fifth-straight PSAC West title this weekend when it hosts Slippery Rock. The Vulcans have won 23-straight games against PSAC West opponents with their last divisional loss coming in 2006. Cal U also enters the weekend with an 11-game win streak in home divisional games with its last defeat coming against IUP in November 2006.
• Cal U hosts Slippery Rock for Homecoming 2010 this weekend at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans have won each of their last five Homecoming contests en route to a divisional title each year. Last season, Cal U posted a 38-14 victory over Edinboro before finishing the season with an 11-4 overall record.
• This weekend will feature two of the most veteran centers in college football, as Slippery Rock's
Brandon Fusco and Cal U's #
Nick Piccirillo# have combined to start 84 games in their careers. Fusco was named a preseason All-American by several organizations this year after starting all 33 games from 2007-09. Piccirillo has been an All-PSAC West selection in each of the last two seasons and enters this weekend having started a team-high 45-consecutive games.
• Cal U has won 58 of its last 68 games (.853) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 38-4 (.905) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.
• The Vulcans feature a group of 24 seniors in 2010. The senior class has compiled a record of 42-7 and started a combined 252 games.
• The Vulcans are off to their second 6-0 start in the last four years. Prior to posting an undefeated regular season in 2007, the last time Cal U won its first six games of the year was in 1958. Overall, the Vulcans have opened a season at 6-0 only five times since 1916.
• Since an overtime thriller in the season-opener, the Vulcans have not allowed a touchdown in the second half over the last five games. The only points after halftime scored during that stretch was a fourth-quarter safety by Clarion. Meanwhile, Cal U has been a juggernaut by scoring 100 points in the second half since the first game of the year.
• In only his second year with the program, senior #
Josh Portis# has established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in Vulcan history. Last week, he posted his fourth career 300-yard game and threw three touchdowns to move into third place all-time with 50 passing touchdowns. Portis is also on pace to eclipse 5,000 yards passing in the coming weeks, a mark accomplished by only four quarterbacks in the history of Cal U.
• In addition to boasting the league's best total defense, the Vulcans again lead the PSAC in sacks. Through the first six weeks of the year, Cal U has totaled 24 sacks with 14 different players registering at least a 0.5 sack, led by 4.0 from redshirt freshmen #
Darnell Harding# and #
BJ Stevens#. The Vulcans are actually averaging more sacks per game than the 2007 unit which set the school record and ranked second in the country with 49 total sacks.
• One of only two undefeated teams in the PSAC, Cal U leads the conference in a staggering 14 statistical categories. Impressively, the Vulcans feature the league's top-ranked scoring (40.5 points) and total offense (452.8 yards) behind the play-calling of first-year coordinator #Walt Harris#. Meanwhile, under the direction of veteran coordinator #Mike Conway#, the Vulcans lead the PSAC in scoring defense (15.0 points) and total defense (225.5 yards).
• Sophomore running back #
Lamont Smith# is on pace to become the fourth different Vulcan to rush for 1,000 yards since 2004. Through the first six games this season, he ranks second in the PSAC with 770 rushing yards, averaging 128.3 yards per game. Since 2002,
Antoine Bagwell (2004-05) was the fastest player to reach 1,000-yard mark, surpassing the mark in Week 6 during the 2004 season.
• The Vulcans enter the weekend as the top offense in the PSAC in terms of third-down efficiency. In six games, the Cal U offense has converted 51.7 percent of its third downs, while no other team in the league has converted 45 percent of its third downs. Against Clarion, Cal U converted an unbelievable 12-of-18 third downs.
• Due to injuries at the fullback position, true freshman #
RJ Thomas# has started against both Lock Haven and Gannon.
