CALIFORNIA (Sept. 8) – California University of Pennsylvania senior forward
Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) moved up the program's record book on Tuesday, as the Vulcans suffered a 4-1 loss to Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
Cal U drops to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in league action, while Gannon moves to 2-2-1 and 1-0 in divisional play.
Luecke collected an assist in the win for his 109th career point which ties him for fourth place in program history with
Pete Kariotis (2001-04). Luecke also now is alone for fifth in school history with 21 career assists, breaking a previous tie with
Nicholas Addlery (1999-2002), who is currently playing professionally with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division.
After the game was scoreless for 35 minutes, the Golden Knights tallied a pair of goals in the first period. In the second period, Gannon collected a pair of insurance goals including an 'own goal' by the Vulcans. Cal U escaped the shutout when senior
Justin Taucher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) registered his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Luecke in the 89th minute.
The Vulcans used three goalkeepers in the loss with juniors
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) and
Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) finishing with five and three saves, respectively.
The two teams were each called for 11 fouls, while the teams also were issued a combined eight cards (seven yellow, one red).
Cal U returns to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when it travels to face Mercyhurst in Erie. The game is now scheduled for a 4 p.m. start after originally before set for 5 p.m.
