No. 11 Cal U falls at Shippensburg, 2-1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 26) – After trailing for most of the first period, the No. 11 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team rallied to tie the game before losing 2-1 at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Saturday.

The Vulcans fall to 7-2 overall, while the Red Raiders improve to 4-4-2 this season.

Shippensburg jumped out to 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game when graduate student Laura Brown scored off an assist from senior Gayle Kuntzmann. Despite taking twice as many shots (12-6) as the Red Raiders in the period, the Vulcans were unable to even the score before halftime.

In the 60th minute, junior forward Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) tied the game at 1-1 off a feed from classmate Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). The game remained tied until sophomore Emily Andrew scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Kuntzmann at the 71:31-mark. In the final minutes of the game, the Vulcans were unable to force overtime after having back-to-back shot attempts blocked by the Red Raiders.

In the loss, Cal U held a sizeable 19-8 advantage in shots and also had 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) made two save on eight shots, while graduate student Beth Long finished with 12 saves for Shippensburg.

The Vulcans return to PSAC West action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Edinboro for a 4 p.m. contest. Cal U won the first meeting this year against the Fighting Scots, 2-0.
