CALIFORNIA (Sept. 2) – The No. 24 Vulcans used two first-half goals from senior
Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and freshman
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) to earn a 2-0 victory over Edinboro in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West opener at Roadman Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The nationally-ranked California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 2-0 overall, while Edinboro falls to 1-1-1 this season.
Heister notched her second goal of the season at the 16:06-mark off an assist from junior
Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). The Vulcans increased their lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute when Work tallied her first career goal off assists from both Heister and Honeygosky.
Sophomore
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) recorded her second-straight shutout after making four saves in 90 minutes of action. The Fighting Scots' goalkeeper Kate Stukbauer collected six saves in the loss.
Cal U out-shot Edinboro by a 23-10 margin, including a 16-5 advantage in the second half, and also had five corner kicks.
The Vulcans continue PSAC West play on Saturday, Sept. 5, when they travel to face No. 8 Slippery Rock for a 1 p.m. contest. Last year, Cal U and Slippery Rock split the season series with the home team winning each game by a 2-0 count.
