CALIFORNIA (Sept. 19) – The No. 24 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team took sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West standings on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Clarion at Roadman Park.
The Vulcans now lead the eight-team division with 15 points behind a 5-1 mark in league play and 6-1 overall record. Cal U entered the day tied with defending-conference champion Mercyhurst and IUP for first place with 12 points, but the Lakers and Crimson Hawks played a 2-2 double-overtime tie. Meanwhile, Clarion falls to 0-6 against PSAC West opponents this season and 3-6 overall.

Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) tallied her fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute off assists from senior
Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) and junior
Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). Heister then added an insurance goal three minutes later off a feed from Honeygosky, who leads the Vulcans with seven assists this year.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) earned her second-straight shutout and fourth of the season after making one save on three shots, while the Golden Eagles' Jenna Kulik finished with 13 stops.
The Vulcans held a sizeable 28-3 advantage in shots and also posted a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when it travels to IUP for a 4 p.m. contest. The two teams split the season series last year with the road team winning each game, as the Vulcans claimed a 2-0 win at IUP.
