CALIFORNIA (Sept. 19) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team went undefeated and collected four victories over the weekend at Hamer Hall in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover Tournament hosted by the Vulcans.
With the wins, Cal U improves to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in league play as league crossover matches are included in the conference record this season.
The Vulcans opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-13, 25-15) over East Stroudsburg on Friday. Senior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs while classmate
Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) added seven kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) directed the offense with 29 assists and also collected eight digs.
In a rematch of last year's PSAC Championship, Cal U then earned a 3-2 win (25-23, 26-24, 15-25, 23-25, 15-10) over Lock Haven. Moore posted her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and a team-high 22 digs. Nist also collected a double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs. Middle hitters
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) each finished with 12 kills, while junior libero
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) recorded 19 digs. Eshleman finished with 46 assists – the second-highest total of her career.
On Saturday, the Vulcans started the day with a 3-0 shutout victory (25-17, 25-11, 25-13) over Millersville. Nist posted her ninth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 17 digs and Paronish added 14 digs. Eshleman engineered the Vulcans' offensive attack with 30 assists, while two-time All-American
Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) had nine assists in her first action in almost three weeks.
Cal U then posted a balanced attack to claim a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) over Shippensburg in the final match of the two-day tournament. Freshman middle hitter
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) led the Vulcans with seven kills, while five other players had at least six kills. Paronish finished with 14 digs, while da Silva and Eshleman combined for 29 assists.
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when they host Wheeling Jesuit in a rematch of last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Hamer Hall and will be available on-line via
