CALIFORNIA (Aug. 29) – Behind the third career hat trick by senior Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and goals from five other players, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team cruised to a 9-1 victory over Ohio Valley (W.Va.) on Saturday at Roadman Park.

Through two games, the Vulcans have out-scored their opponents by a combined 14-4 en route to a 2-0 record. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 0-1 on the season.

Luecke, the two-time defending PSAC-leader in points, tallied seven points in the victory and already has four goals and three assists in two games this year. Junior Felipe Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Coleaio Objetivo) added two goals and an assist against Ohio Valley, while classmate Spencer Crider (Orrstown, Pa./Chambersburg) and freshman Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More) collected a pair of assists in the win.

Cal U dominated Ohio Valley in the first period, taking a 5-0 lead and allowing the Fighting Scots to have only one shot attempt. Souza opened the scoring in the eighth minute with an unassisted goal off a corner kick before Luecke posted back-to-back goals for the Vulcans off assists from Visekruna and Crider, respectively. Cal U increased its lead to 4-0 when junior Adam Green (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) scored his first career goal at the 38:49-mark on a header after a deflection off the crossbar. The Vulcans' final first-half goal came in the 43rd minute when freshman Chris Moehler scored off assists from sophomore Carter Fox (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) and Luecke.

In the second half, Luecke completed his trick after scoring off a corner kick from Souza in the 54th minute. Newcomer Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored his first goal of the season at the 67:58-mark on a penalty kick and Souza scored on a breakaway less than a minute later. Freshman Alec Picardi (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) recorded his first career goal in the 71st minute before Ohio Valley avoided the shutout in the 79th minute.

Three Cal U goalkeepers saw action in the victory with sophomore Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) earning the win and classmate Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) accounting for all six saves by the Vulcans.

For the game, the Vulcans out-shot the Fighting Scots by a 30-10 margin and held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The nine goals scored by Cal U is the highest total since the single-game school record of 11 in 1994.

The Vulcans return to action on Monday, Aug. 31, when they travel to face Charleston (W.Va.) for a 4:30 p.m. contest. Last year, Cal U posted a 7-0 shutout against the Golden Eagles at Roadman Park.
