Cal U falls to Kutztown in semifinals, 1-0

WEST CHESTER (Nov. 6) – After battling through a scoreless first half, the No. 16 Vulcans suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 24 Kutztown in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team drops to 15-5-1 this season and is eliminated from the PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, Kutztown improves to 15-4-2 this year and advances to face host and No. 5 West Chester in the championship game tomorrow, Nov. 7. The Golden Rams earned a 4-1 win over IUP in the other PSAC Semifinal game on Friday.

The Vulcans, who were ranked second in the latest NCAA Atlantic Regional rankings, now wait to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Selections for the tournament will be announced on Monday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. via a webcast selection show on NCAA.com.

Cal U dominated offensively in the first half by holding an 8-0 advantage in shots despite Kutztown taking three corner kicks. In the second half, sophomore forward Chelsea Bressler scored the game-winning unassisted goal in the 67th minute – her team-high eighth goal of the season – to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) finished with two saves on four shots in the loss, while Kutztown freshman Alyssa Hackelberg recorded seven saves in the shutout.

For the game, the Vulcans held a sizeable 12-4 advantage in shots.

Cal U was without two of their top four scorers – junior Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and freshman Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) – due to injury.
