Vulcans sweep Shippensburg in semifinals

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Nov. 13) – The Vulcans have advanced to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship for the fifth-straight year after earning a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-8, 25-19) over Shippensburg in the conference semifinals on Friday evening.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 32-5 this season. The Vulcans will face host Lock Haven in the championship match tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 14. This will be the fourth time in the last five years that Cal U and Lock Haven have met in the PSAC Championship.

Senior setter Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) and junior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) both posted a team-high 12 digs, while da Silva also added 33 assists. Seniors Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) added nine and eight digs, repectively, and sophomore Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) posted seven digs and three service aces.

Offensively, Nist led the Vulcans with 21 kills and sophomore middle hitter Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) collected seven kills.
