CALIFORNIA (Oct. 6) – The Vulcans played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Slippery Rock on Tuesday afternoon at Roadman Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
It marks the first tie of the season for the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team, moving its season record to 8-3-1 overall with a 6-2-1 mark in league play while Slippery Rock moves to 5-3-3 overall and 3-3-3 in divisional action. The scoreless tie for the Vulcans is their first since a 0-0 double-overtime tie at Lock Haven during the 2007 campaign.
Both teams attempted five shots in the first half with each team missing opportunities. In the sixth minute, The Rock attempted back-to-back shots with Cal U making a pivotal 'team' save on the first attempt. The Vulcans best scoring opportunity came in the 29th minute when senior
Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) missed high on a shot after The Rock goalkeeper collided with a teammate.
In the second half, Cal U had a great look from freshman
Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) in the 74th minute when she fired a shot off the post. Slippery Rock had its own close call eight minute later when Alyssa Barrett hit the post, keeping the game tied at 0-0.
A total of five shots were taken over the two overtime periods with neither team being able to connect. The Vulcans recorded their sixth shutout of the year with the tie and are now tied with IUP for first place in the PSAC West standings with 19 points.
Sophomore
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) finished with four saves on 15 attempts, while The Rock's Alli Bird made two saves on 12 shots.
Cal U returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 8, when it travels to face Wheeling Jesuit for a 7 p.m. start. The game was originally scheduled to be the Vulcans' season-opener in August before field conditions forced the game to be postponed.
