INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 3) – The California University of Pennsylvania football team captured the first-ever Coal Bowl against rival Indiana University of Pennsylvania with an impressive 41-28 win at George P. Miller Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks have lost three-straight games to fall to 3-3 this season and 0-3 in league action. Cal U has now defeated IUP for three-straight years for the first time since the 1958-61 seasons.
Graduate student quarterback
Josh Portis (Woodland Hills, Calif./William H. Taft/Maryland) continued his efficient play, passing for 197 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions. Over the last 15 quarters, he has thrown 14 touchdown passes with no interceptions. Portis also collected four first downs on the ground against IUP.
Senior wide receiver
AJ Jackson (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh/Sequoias) tied his career high with three touchdown catches (24, 34, 32), posting 102 yards on five receptions. Jackson now leads the Vulcans with nine touchdowns after scoring at least one touchdown in each of the last five games.
Junior receiver
Terrance Moore (Key West, Fla./Key West/Mesa) had two first-quarter touchdown receptions (7, 67) and also completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jackson in the third quarter. The Florida native finished with 80 yards on three catches.
The Vulcans jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on their first possession when Portis connected with Moore on a seven-yard fade to corner of the end zone. Cal U increased the lead to 14-0 on the next drive when Portis found Moore on a 67-yard score down the sideline.
After not managing a first down on its first two drives, IUP engineered a 15-play drive that was capped with a five-yard touchdown by freshman Harvie Tuck early in the second quarter. The Vulcans answered with a 37-yard field goal by
Marc Domonkos (Johnstown, Pa./Bishop McCort/Lock Haven) with 4:38 left before the half. On its next possession, Cal U need only two plays to take a 24-7 lead with 1:24 remaining in the second quarter when Portis found Jackson for a 24-yard score.
On the Crimson Hawks' first possession of the second half, IUP trimmed the lead to 24-14 on an eight-yard run by quarterback Pat Smith. The Cal U defense forced IUP back to the 2-yard line on its next drive following a sack by sophomore defensive lineman
Marcus Cook (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and a penalty. Using the good field position after the punt, the Vulcans increased its lead to 31-14 on a 34-yard touchdown catch by Jackson near the sidelines.
Cal U took a 34-14 lead early in the fourth on a 34-yard field goal by Domonkos. On the ensuing kickoff, the Vulcans forced and recovered a fumble at the Crimson Hawks' 32-yard line. Cal U then executed a wide-receiver pass from Moore to Jackson on the first play, 41-14, with 8:22 left in the game. IUP added a pair of fourth-quarter scores to make the final score 41-28.
In his first start as a Vulcan, junior linebacker
Anthony Roberts (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg/Iowa Central) collected a team-high nine tackles (four solo) with 1.0 tackle for loss (TFL), 0.5 sack and one pass break-up. True freshman safety
Rontez Miles (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) made eight stops (five solo), while four Vulcans finished with five tackles.
Cal U continues its road trip on Saturday, Oct. 10, when it travels to face Lock Haven. Kickoff at Hubert Jack Stadium in Lock Haven, Pa., is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Vulcans have won the last five meetings against the Bald Eagles, including a 56-3 Homecoming victory last year at Adamson Stadium.
