CALIFORNIA (Oct. 26) – Despite a goal on a penalty kick by senior
Nick Helbig (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) and holding the advantage in shots, the Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss in non-conference play to Seton Hill on Monday at Roadman Park.
With its third loss in the last four games, the California University men's soccer team drops to 11-6 this season. Meanwhile, Seton Hill moves to 9-6-3 overall.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Doug Schmitt scored an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of the game. Seton Hill continued its quick early scoring at the 11:21-mark when sophomore Mike Belsito scored off a pass from senior Garrett Fishaw. Despite both teams attempting 12 shots in the first half, the Griffins entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Seton Hill added an insurance goal in the 66th minute before Helbig scored his fourth goal of the year, second via penalty kick. After the goal by Helbig, the Vulcans continued to threaten the Griffin lead, taking six shots compared to only one by Seton Hill.
Junior goalkeeper
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) tied his season high with seven saves in the loss, while the Griffins' Jon DeLuca made five saves in 90 minutes.
For the game, Cal U out-shot Seton Hill by a 21-16 margin with both teams attempting four corner kicks. The Griffins were whistled for 22 fouls and issued two cards in the win, compared to only six fouls by the Vulcans.
Helbig was one of four senior players recognized before the game as part of Senior Day.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan at Roadman Park. The game, which will start at 3 p.m., marks the final home game of the season for the Vulcans.
