Vulcans win three weekend matches

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 25) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team rebounded from a loss earlier in the week by collecting three victories over the weekend with wins over Edinboro and Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play and a non-conference victory against Findlay (Ohio).

With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 25-5 overall this year with a 15-0 mark in league action. Cal U opened the weekend with a 3-1 victory (25-18, 23-25, 29-27, 25-23) at Edinboro on Friday and have now won 14-straight matches against the Fighting Scots. The Vulcans then earned a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-22, 25-16) against Gannon on Saturday before posting a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-20, 25-13) against Findlay.

Against the Fighting Scots, senior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) posted a kill/dig double-double with a team-high 18 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added 12 kills and three blocks, while senior All-American Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) finished with eight kills and eight blocks (two solo). Junior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) paced the defense with 26 digs and senior Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) collected 14 digs. Senior setter Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) directed the offense with 45 assists and also registered eight digs and four kills.

On Saturday in Erie, Amaral recorded 14 kills and five blocks in the 3-0 victory. Paronish finished with 16 digs while Moore and Nist collected 13 and 12 digs, respectively. da Silva posted 33 digs, eight digs, six kills and three blocks against the Golden Knights.

Amaral also led the Vulcans with nine kills against Findlay, while Nist added eight kills. Moore collected 14 digs, while sophomore Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) and freshman Ana Luisa Aguilar Almeida (Belo Horizont, Brazil/Colegio Promove) each collected 11 digs. da Silva, a two-time All-American, engineered the Cal U offense with 34 assists and five digs.

The Vulcans return to action on Friday, Oct. 30, when they host Slippery Rock in Hamer Hall at 7 p.m.
