No. 21 Vulcans set record in 5-0 victory

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Oct. 24) – Behind two goals and one assist by junior forward Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca), the No. 21 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team established a school record for wins in a season and clinched the program's first-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament appearance with a 5-0 win at Lock Haven on Saturday in PSAC West play.

With their fifth victory in the last six games, the Vulcans moved back into a tie for first place with IUP in the PSAC West standings with 25 points behind an 8-3-1 divisional record. Overall, Cal U moves to 13-4-1 this season to break the single-season school record for wins (12; 1992, 1994, 2008). Meanwhile, Lock Haven falls to 3-12-1 this year with a 2-9-1 mark in league play.

Cal U took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when sophomore Elizabeth Johnston (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) scored her first goal of the season from classmate Darija Davidson (Courtice, Ontario/St. Stephen's). Less than four minute later, senior forward Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) tallied her team-leading 13th goal of the season off a pass from Regney.

The Vulcans continued to add to their first-half lead in the 29th minute when Regney scored off a feed from sophomore Brittany Sullivan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). Cal U entered halftime with a 4-0 lead after Sullivan posted her fourth goal of the year with an assist to freshman Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel).

Regney increased the lead to 5-0 at the 54:40-mark off a pass from junior Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who leads the team with nine assists.

For the game, Cal U out-shot Lock Haven by a 19-7 margin after holding a 12-2 advantage in the first half. The Vulcans also held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) earned her eighth shutout of the season after making one save in 90 minutes. Lock Haven's Bentley Kim finished with two saves in the game.

The Vulcans returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they host IUP for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Earlier this season, Cal U earned a 2-1 road victory at IUP.
