Vulcans sweep rival IUP, 3-0

INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 13) – Behind a combined 33 kills by seniors Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), along with a career-high 35 digs by junior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria), the Vulcans earned a 3-0 victory (25-12, 27-25, 25-17) on the road against rival IUP on Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team extended its win streak to 14 matches and improved to 21-4 overall and 12-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, IUP drops to 14-11 this year and 7-5 in league action.

Nist collected a match-high 20 kills and added 13 digs for her 13th kill/dig double-double of the season. Amaral finished with 13 kills, while freshman Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) posted eight kills. Sophomore middle hitter Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added seven kills with no errors on 16 attempts for a .438 hitting percentage.

In addition to 35 digs by Paronish, seniors Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Nist finished with 19 and 13 digs, respectively. All-American setter Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) registered 41 assists and nine digs in the win over the Crimson Hawks.

Cal U returns to action on Friday, Oct. 16, for its first home match in over two weeks when it hosts Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. in Hamer Hall.
