CAL U NOTES

• Cal U continues divisional play with its Homecoming contest against Edinboro today. The Vulcans are coming off a 48-14 win at Lock Haven last Saturday. Last week, the Fighting Scots spoiled IUP's Homecoming with a 38-24 victory.

• The Vulcans and Fighting Scots are meeting for the 76th time with Cal U owning a 38-35-2 lead after winning the last four games. The two teams are meeting for the Vulcans' Homecoming for the second time in three years, as Cal U claimed a 26-8 victory in 2007.

• Quarterback #Josh Portis# threw for a career-high 274 yards and four touchdowns last week as the Vulcans posted a 48-14 victory at Lock Haven. Junior running back #Windell Brown# rushed for a season-high 77 yards and two touchdowns against the Bald Eagles. In the first half, the Cal U defense limited Lock Haven to only 62 yards of total offense and didn't allow the Bald Eagles to cross midfield.

• Following a 20-year career as an assistant coach at Edinboro, Scott Browning enters his fourth season as head coach of the Fighting Scots. He holds a 28-12 overall record and tied the school record this year for fastest coach to 25 wins, needing only 37 games. Browning has coached the offensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator while at Edinboro.

• Edinboro returns 35 lettermen and 15 starters from last year's squad that was 9-2 overall and finished tied for second in the PSAC West standings. The Fighting Scots are led by senior record-setting quarterback Trevor Harris. The two-time PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year, Harris has thrown for over 15,000 yards and 89 touchdowns in his career. After losing its top four wide receivers from last year, Edinboro features five players with at least 15 receptions this season. Junior wide receiver Josh Brown leads the team with 351 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The Fighting Scots rushing attack has been keyed by the duo of sophomore David Bostic and graduate student Junior Jabbie, who have combined for 643 rushing yards and seven scores. Harris has also rushed for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, brothers Dan Skelton and Ryan Skelton lead the team with 56 and 47 tackles, respectively. Senior defensive end Jeremy Appell has added 36 stops with a team-high 7.5 tackles for loss (TFL).

• The Vulcans are off to a 4-0 start in divisional play this year, including wins over rivals Clarion and IUP. This marks the fourth-straight year in which Cal U has won its first four divisional games with the previous three seasons leading to divisional titles.

• Cal U hosts Edinboro for Homecoming 2009 today at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans have won each of their last four Homecoming contests en route to a divisional title each year. Last year, Cal U posted a 56-3 victory over Lock Haven before finishing the season with a 12-2 overall record.

• In his first year with the program, quarterback #Josh Portis# has established himself as one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the conference. He ranks third in the league and 17th in the nation with a 150.5 passing efficiency behind a PSAC-best 19 touchdown passes. Portis has not thrown an interception in his last 120 pass attempts, a span that covers 19 quarters.

• Over the last four weeks, junior wide receiver #Terrance Moore# has proven to be a key playmaker for the Vulcan offense. During that span, the transfer from Mesa Community College (Ariz.) has scored seven touchdowns on 17 receptions for 343 yards (20.2 yards/reception). This year, he also has thrown for a 32-yard touchdown at IUP, rushed twice on reverses for 27 yards and returned four kickoffs for almost 100 yards.

• The Cal U offense features one of the deepest group of skilled players in the region. The Vulcans have completed passes to 12 different players and touchdown passes to five different players in 2008.

• During its current five-game win streak, the Cal U offense has averaged an impressive 41.2 yards/game and 418.0 yards/total offense after scoring only a combined 27 points in the first two games of the season. The Vulcans have excelled in ball security during that span, committing only three turnovers. Cal U has also scored on 22-of-25 trips inside the red-zone over the last five games.

• Cal U head coach #John Luckhardt# is on the verge of reaching a personal milestone. Already the winningest Vulcan football coach, he is currently in sixth place among active NCAA Division II head coaches with 199 career victories entering this weekend. Only five active head coaches in Division II have reached the 200-win plateau, including the all-time wins leader Ken Sparks of Carson-Newman (Tenn.) with 281 victories.

• The Vulcans have won 46 of their last 54 games (.852) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. Cal U has posted a 30-4 record (.882) in regular-season games since the 2006 campaign.

• Senior wide receiver #AJ Jackson# continues to be one of the top playmaking receivers in the nation this year. The 6-6 senior leads all PSAC receivers and is tied for second overall in the conference with 10 touchdowns. Jackson has scored at least one touchdown in each of the last six games, including a season-high three scores two weeks ago at IUP. He is among the league leaders with 39 receptions and 531 receiving yards through seven games this season. Last year against the Fighting Scots, Jackson had seven catches for 77 yards and a third-quarter touchdown.

• The Vulcans rank first among PSAC West team and third overall in the PSAC in rushing defense, allowing only 95.6 yards per game. Cal U is allowing a stout 2.9 yards/attempt and haven't allowed a 100-yard runner all season. Edinboro enters this weekend's game with nearly 1,000 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in the first seven games of the season.

• After missing most of four games due to injury, junior running back #Windell Brown# has seen significant action over the last two weeks. Combined at IUP and Lock Haven, Brown has rushed for 132 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns. The talented Duquesne product opened the year as the starter after averaging almost 7.0 yards/carry in his first two years with the program.

• Over the last three weeks, junior kicker #Marc Domonkos# has made 19-of-19 PAT attempts and five-of-six field goals. A transfer from Lock Haven, Domonkos drilled field goals of 25 and 35 yards last week in the win over his former team.

• Despite two early-season losses this year, the Vulcans have won 27 of their last 32 games at Adamson Stadium since the 2005 campaign.
