WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 10) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team collected a trio of 3-0 sweeps over the weekend in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play, defeating Kutztown, Cheyney and West Chester.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 20-4 overall and 11-0 in conference play. Cal U has now won 13-straight matches and lost only three sets during the win streak.
Cal U opened the weekend with a 3-0 win (25-8, 25-14, 27-25) at Kutztown on Friday night. Senior middle hitter
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) led the team with 12 kills after hitting at a .500 clip. Classmates
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) and
Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) finished with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Junior libero
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) paced the defensive effort with 17 digs, while Nist finished with a kill/dig double-double after adding 15 digs against the Golden Bears. Senior setter
Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) directed the offense with 40 assists and sophomore defensive specialist
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) collected four service aces.
The Vulcans returned to the court in dominating fashion against Cheyney, winning 3-0 (25-3, 25-4, 25-5) on Saturday despite not playing Amaral, da Silva and Nist. Freshman outside hitter
Ana Luisa Aguilar Almeida (Belo Horizont, Brazil/Colegio Promove) finished with a career-high 10 kills on 12 attempts for a .750 hitting percentage with four service aces. Classmate
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) posted eight kills and junior
Rachel Wagner (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) finished with seven kills. Sophomore setter
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) engineered the offensive attack with 29 assists.
Cal U then closed the weekend with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) at West Chester on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore middle hitter
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) collected 12 kills on 21 attacks and Amaral added 11 kills. Paronish led three Vulcans in double-figure digs with 15, while da Silva recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs.
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 13, when they travel to face IUP for a 7 p.m. match.
