Vulcans shutout Pitt-Johnstown, 1-0

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 1) – Behind a goal from senior Justin Taucher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) in the final three minutes of the game, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team extended its win streak to four games following a 1-0 road victory over Pitt-Johnstown on Thursday.

The Vulcans improve to 7-3 overall on the year with a 6-0 mark against non-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West teams. The Mountain Cats drop to 5-7 this season.

Taucher scored his second game-winning goal of the year and fourth of his career off an assist from sophomore Steve Nese (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) at the 87:22-mark.

The Vulcans dominated offensively throughout the game by holding a sizeable 17-5 advantage in shots, including a 10-1 edge in the first period. Both teams collected four corner kicks.

Junior goalkeepers Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) and Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) combined for the shutout, making three saves on five shot attempts. Dagnal earned his third win of the season after playing the final 45 minutes of the game. The Vulcan goalies have not allowed a goal in over 320 minutes, dating back to the first period of the game against Lock Haven on Sept. 16.

In the loss, senior Craig Neff recorded eight saves for UPJ.

Cal U continues its road trip on Saturday, Oct. 3, when it travels to face West Chester in PSAC Crossover play. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
