ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 6) – The Vulcans scored twice in four minutes in the first half to defeat Gannon University, 3-1, at Erie, Pa., in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team (2-0-2, 1-0-1 PSAC West) took a quick 1-0 lead in the 12th minute with a goal by junior Nick Helbig (South Park, Pa./South Park) on a header off a corner kick from senior Shakir McCoy (Huber Heights, Ohio/Tecumseh/Wayne). The Vulcans expanded their lead at the 15:27-mark on a goal by senior Jeremy Blymiller (Erie, Pa./McDowell) via a long pass and assist from sophomore goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park).

Cal U continued its offensive attack when junior forward Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) collected his third goal of the season on an assist from junior Justin Taucher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) in the 31st minute.

The Vulcans held control of the game throughout the first period, out-shooting the Knights by a 12-5 margin.

In the second half, Gannon avoided the shutout at the 76:48-mark with a goal from Bruce Stephen.

Yobbi earned his second victory of the season after allowing no goals and posting three saves in 75-plus minutes. Sophomore Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) finished the game in the net for Cal U after allowing one goal and making one save in almost 15 minutes of action.

For the game, the Vulcans out-shot the Knights by a 20-13 margin, while Gannon held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks in the game.

Cal U continues PSAC West action on Tuesday, Sept. 9, when it travels to face Lock Haven University at 2 p.m. in Lock Haven, Pa.
