Men's Soccer opens PSAC play with 1-1 tie

Box Score

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team battled to its second-straight, 1-1 double-overtime tie on Tuesday afternoon at Roadman Park against Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

Junior Nick Helbig (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) put the Vulcans on top early in the second period with his first goal of the season at the 46:28-mark after getting the feed via a header from senior Jeremy Blymiller (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Cal U looked to maintain its lead for the remainder of regulation before Mercyhurst evened the contest at 75:19 when senior Marty Powell scored on a header.

Cal looked to win the game late in regulation when junior forward Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) appeared to take a volley on a breakaway before he was called for an offside penalty.

In the two overtime periods, the Lakers attempted a total of five shots and looked to have won the game in the second period after the ball found the back of the net. However, the officials ruled that Vulcans' goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) had possession of the ball before the Mercyhurst player kicked it into the net.

Yobbi posted a season-high 10 saves on 20 attempts in 110 minutes, while Lakers' goalkeeper Danny Mudd recorded five saves on 10 attempts.

Cal U continues PSAC-West play on Saturday, Sept. 6 when it travels to face PSAC-newcomer Gannon University for a 3 p.m. start. Vulcan fans can follow the game on-line via live stats calculated by the Golden Knights at the following site: http://www.gannon.edu/sports/men/soccer/lstats/xlive.htm.
