Men's Soccer posts victory at Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W.Va. (Sept. 16) - The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team won for the third time in four contests, defeating Ohio Valley University, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Nick Helbig (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute after senior Jeremy Blymiller (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and sophomore Sede Wilson (Monrovia, Liberia / Gahanna (Ohio)) each scored first-period goals.

The Vulcans are now 4-1-2 on the season, while the Fighting Scots move to 3-3-1 after the loss.

Cal U came out aggressive in the first half, scoring two goals in the first 21 minutes of the game. Blymiller put the Vulcans on the scoreboard at the 12:24-mark with his fifth goal of the season with an assist to Justin Taucher (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley). Wilson then increased the lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when he tallied the first goal of his career off assists from Mike Kalas (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) in the 21st minute.

The Vulcans took the 2-0 lead into the locker room before junior forward Alan Porter scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the second period. Porter then tied the contest at 2-2 on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.

The score remained tied for over 16 minutes before Helbig scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 84th minute off assists from Kalas and senior Shakir McCoy (Huber Heights, Ohio/Tecumseh/Wayne). The game-winner for Helbig is the first of his career.

Sophomore Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned the win in net for the Vulcans, posting two saves on 10 shots in 90 minutes of action.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when they host East Stroudsburg University for a 12 p.m. contest at Roadman Park. The Warriors are currently in first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings with nine points (3-0 PSAC East, 5-1 overall).
