Cal U wins five-set match against Barry, 3-2

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Aug. 30) – The Vulcans completed the third-annual Shark Classic with an unblemished 4-0 mark after defeating Barry University (Fla.), 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 15-11), on Saturday.

Three California University of Pennsylvania volleyball players tallied double-digit kill totals, led by junior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) with 20. Nist also collected 11 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Junior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) posted 12 kills and led Cal U with a .435 attack percentage, while senior middle hitter Thais Franca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Padre Manoel De Paiva) added 11 kills and 3.0 blocks (one solo).

Junior setter Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) recorded an assist/dig double-double with 49 assists and 13 digs, while adding nine kills and 1.5 blocks. Junior libero Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) steadied the defense with a team-high 15 digs, while Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) and Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) registered 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Barry is a three-time NCAA Division II National Champion with its last national crown coming in 2004.

The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-West play against Clarion University. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Hamer Hall.
