Cal wins season-opener at Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Aug. 28) – Freshman forward Jodi McDonald (Ajax, Ontario/Ajax) scored the game-winning goal to give the Vulcans a season-opening win over University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown by a score of 2-1 on Thursday.

McDonald, one of 17 freshmen on the team, found the back of the net for her first career goal at the 78:09-mark after dribbling pass a Mountain Cat defender and beating freshman goalie Aubrey Mauger for the eventual game-winner.

Fellow freshman Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering) scored first for California University of Pennsylvania off a rebound in the ninth minute. The lone UPJ goal came at the 36:45-mark when Alicia Zack scored on an assist from Chrissy Burnsworth.

Senior goalkeeper Erin Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) earned the victory for the Vulcans after posting two saves on 12 shot attempts, while Mauger suffered the loss after allowing the game-winning goal despite playing just 17-plus minutes.

Cal U dominated the game on the offensive end of the field, out-shooting Pitt-Johnstown by a 26-12 margin in the contest, while also earning six corner kicks.

Sophomore Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) paced the Vulcans' offensive attack with eight shot attempts, while Orrett attempted five shots.

California returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 30, when it hosts Wheeling Jesuit University for a 1 p.m. start at Roadman Park in the Vulcans' home opener.
