CALIFORNIA (Nov. 21) – The No. 17 California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team posted a tough 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-23) win over Lock Haven University on Friday to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and the championship match of the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament.
The Vulcans, who trailed for most of the third set, are advancing to the regional championship match for the third-straight season and fifth time in school history. With its 23rd-consecutive win, Cal U improves to 39-1 overall, while Lock Haven finishes the season at 29-6.
Junior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) registered her 14th double-double of the season with a team-high 13 kills and 10 digs. Senior middle hitter
Thais Franca (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Padre Manoel De Paiva) and junior middle hitter
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) added seven and six kills, respectively.
Defensively, junior libero
Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) led the Vulcans with a match-high 15 digs. Junior setter
Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) also posted a double-double for Cal U, as she collected 28 assists and 10 digs against Lock Haven.
The Vulcans won all three meetings against the Bald Eagles this season, including a 3-0 victory last week in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Championship.
Cal U hosts second-seeded Wheeling Jesuit University in the regional championship match tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 22. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans claimed a 3-0 road win against the Cardinals earlier this season.
