Vulcans fall at Slippery Rock, 2-0

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Nov. 1) – The “turnaround” season for the Vulcans came to a close on Saturday, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 road loss against Slippery Rock University in the final game of the regular season.

With the loss, the Vulcans finish the season with 23 points, just one point shy of qualifying for the program's first-ever appearance in the PSAC Tournament. Cal U posted an eight-win improvement from last year by posting a 12-5-3 overall record with a 7-5-2 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock finished tied for second in the PSAC with 28 points behind a 9-4-1 mark in league action and a 13-5-1 overall record.

The Rock broke a scoreless tie at the 27:51-mark when senior Courtney Hoover scored off an assist from sophomore forward Ashley Paganie. Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead into halftime despite Cal U holding a 7-6 advantage in shots during the first period.

In the second period, Slippery Rock expanded its lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute when sophomore forward Juliana Howell scored on a penalty kick.

Senior goalkeeper Erin Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) registered nine saves on 15 attempts in 90 minutes of action.

For the game, the Rock held a 15-8 edge in shots after taking nine shots in the final 45 minutes. Freshman Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering) and junior Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) each led the Vulcans with two shots.

The contest marked the final collegiate game in the careers of three Vulcan seniors: Cook, midfielder Katie Powell (Bentleyville, Pa./Charleroi) and defender Jennifer Wise (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley).
