CALIFORNIA (Oct. 11) – Behind five touchdown passes from #Kevin McCabe# (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland/Virginia), including three scores to wide receiver #Marcel Pestano# (Lehigh Acres, Fla./Lehigh/Pittsburgh), the No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania football team cruised to a 56-3 Homecoming victory against Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Adamson Stadium on Saturday.

The Vulcans, who are ranked No. 2 in “Super Regional One,” remain atop the divisional standings with a 4-0 league mark and 6-1 overall record, while the Bald Eagles remain winless at 0-7 overall and 0-4 in league action.

McCabe threw for a season-high 310 yards on 19-of-26 attempts with five touchdowns and no interceptions. His five touchdowns are just one shy of the single-game school record of six set by three different quarterbacks. Through seven games this year, the Virginia transfer has completed 65.4 percent (121-185) of his passes for 1,614 yards with 17 touchdowns and four interceptions for a quarterback efficiency of 164.69.

Pestano, who ranks among the league leaders in every receiving category, finished the game with six receptions for a season-best 150 yards and three touchdowns. The 6-0 wide receiver has scored a touchdown in six of the seven games this year and leads the team with 39 receptions for 609 yards.

The Cal U offense scored touchdowns on eight of its 11 total possessions in the contest jumping out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of McCabe-to-Pestano touchdowns (36, 12 yards).

In the opening seconds of the second quarter, McCabe connected with junior wide receiver #AJ Jackson# (Lehigh Acres, Fla. /Lehigh/Sequoias) for a 16-yard score. The two teams then exchanged field goals in the remainder of the quarter before the Vulcans took a 22-3 lead into halftime.

On the first possession of the second half, Lock Haven moved the ball to midfield before senior cornerback #Trey Allen# (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) intercepted a pass in the red zone. The Vulcans quickly turned the turnover into points when McCabe found Pestano for a 66-yard score with 8:58 left in the third quarter.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, McCabe guided the offense on a nine-play, 68-yard drive that was capped with a 27-yard touchdown reception by Jackson.

The Vulcan defense forced a turnover late in the third quarter when sophomore linebacker #Gabe Hernandez# (Scottsdale, Ariz./Coronado/Mesa) recovered a fumble after a sack by defensive end #Thomas Mulabah# (Sterling, Va./Parkview) at the Lock Haven 38-yard line. The Cal U offense again responded with a touchdown when senior running back #Brandon Lombardy# (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Chagrin Falls/Purdue) scampered for a 12-yard score in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.

The Ohio native finished the game with 30 yards on four carries and the touchdown, which moves him into a tie with Ricke Stonewall (1981-84) of Millersville University for ninth place with 43 all-time rushing touchdowns in PSAC history.

The Vulcans later added a nine-yard score by junior #Freddie Bacco# (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) before classmate #Brandon Anderson# (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills/Akron) finished the game's scoring with a 20-yard touchdown with 3:42 left in the game.

The Cal U defense allowed a season-low 66 yards on 36 attempts (1.8 yards per carry) to the Bald Eagles, who were limited to 175 yards of total offense. Lock Haven managed to convert only 4-of-16 third-down attempts despite holding almost a six-minute advantage in time of possession.

Senior linebacker #Jake Howell# (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) led the defensive attack with eight tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss (TFL), while fellow linebacker #Dontey Brown# (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport/Penn State) added six stops and 0.5 TFL.

Cal U, who has won 19 of its last 21 overall games, continues divisional play when it travels to Erie, Pa., to face PSAC-newcomer Gannon University for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 18. The match-up marks the first all-time meeting between the Vulcans and Golden Knights.
