Ekoniak fired an eight-under 134 (66-68) to earn medalist honors for the first time in his career, as he helped the Vulcans capture the tournament title at the season-opening Wheeling Invitational on Friday. He won the event by two strokes after totaling 11 birdies, including a combined seven birdies on the back nine, while at Belmont Hills Country Club. Ekoniak is the first golfer in at least 15 years to record a 36-hole score lower than 140.
