California University of Pa. Director of Athletics Dr. Thomas Pucci announced the addition of Daniel Caulfield as the head coach of men's and women's cross country and the assistant coach for men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field.
Caulfield joins the Cal staff after serving as the men's and women's track & field and cross country coach at Clarion University since January, 2005. He will oversee the Vulcans' men's and women's cross country teams, and assist with the track & field teams under Roger Kingdom, the Director of the Cal Men's & Women's Track & Field and Cross Country programs.
A native of Roscommon, Ireland, Caulfield is the national indoor record holder for the 800-meter run (1:47.21) and won numerous awards while representing his country. He was a two-time European Cup champion in the 800-meter run (1995) and 1,500-meter runs (2004) and was among the Top 50 in the IAAF World rankings in 2001.
He was also a Millrose Games runner-up on two occasions, placed eighth in the 2001 World Indoor Championships and 18th in the 2001 World Outdoor Championships.
Caulfield is a graduate of Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., where he earned his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in 1995. After working for a year in an exercise psychiology lab in Dublin, Ireland, he returned to Adams State to serve as a graduate assistant coach for six seasons and gain his master's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
As an undergrad, Caulfield was a 10-time All-American and four-time NCAA Division II Champion. He helped Adams State to national cross country championships in 1993 and 1994, and was the school and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record holder in the 800 and 1,500-meter runs.
While coaching at Adams State, the Grizzlies won four NCAA women's cross country championships (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004) and two men's titles (1998, 2003). Adams State has won more women's cross country national championships since joining NCAA Division II in 1992 than any other school.
