Randy Roth brings more than two decades of collegiate coaching experience, all on the NCAA Division I level, into his second season with the Cal men's basketball program, which posted a 24-7 overall record and won the PSAC West regular-season title in 2007.
For the six seasons prior to joining the Cal program (2001-06), Roth coached in Pittsburgh, including five seasons at Duquesne University (2002-06) and one year at Robert Morris (2001). Prior to that, Roth coached three years at Nebraska (1998-00), five years at Ohio State (1993-97), one season at Akron (1992), two years at Butler (1990-91) and five seasons at Ohio University (1985-89).
During his career, Roth has been part of six teams that have advanced to postseason play, including the 1998 Nebraska squad and the 1985 Ohio U. team that both qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
He also recruited several players who propelled Ohio State to the 1999 Final Four, including 1998 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Michael Redd and Ken Johnson, the Big Ten career record holder for blocked shots.
In addition to the NCAA appearances, Roth was part of National Invitation Tournament teams at four different schools: Nebraska (1999), Ohio State (1993), Butler (1991) and Ohio U. (1986).
He began his coaching career at Logan (Ohio) High School in 1982, then spent one season as an assistant at Eastern Arizona Junior College, where he helped the Gila Monsters advance to the 1984 NJCAA Tournament finals.
Roth earned his bachelor's degree in education in 1983 and his master's in higher education administration in 1987, both from Ohio University. He resides in Moon Township, Pa., with wife Jeanine, son Connor (12) and daughter Casey (9).
