A prolific scorer during his recent playing career, Preston Boswell enters his first season as a volunteer assistant at California (PA) in the 2022-23 campaign.

Boswell was a starting guard for the Vulcans last year after previously playing two seasons for Danny Sancomb at Wheeling before playing one year at West Liberty. He scored a combined 1,583 points over 117 games (all starts) and played in the NCAA Tournament three times during collegiate career.

A native of West Virginia, Boswell helped Cal return to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2008. He led the team in minutes per game, free-throw percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio while averaging 11.2 points per game. The Vulcans finished the year with 23 victories while advancing to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.

Boswell made an immediate impact as a freshman at Wheeling. He finished third on the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game and paced the team with 57 three-pointers made. The Cardinals earned an at-large berth to the 2017 NCAA Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. In the opening round of the tournament, Boswell scored the game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds to help Wheeling post a 96-95 overtime victory over national-power West Liberty.

As a sophomore, Boswell was named to the All-MEC Second-Team after finishing among the league leaders with 17.3 points per game. He was also chosen to the MEC All-Tournament Team after helping the Cardinals capture the program’s first league championship in over a decade.

Boswell was forced to sit out the 2018-19 campaign due to transfer rules. As a junior at West Liberty, he averaged 11.3 points per game with the Hilltoppers eventually claiming the MEC Championship after finishing first in the league standings.

At the scholastic level, Boswell was a three-time all-state selection in basketball and helped Magnolia capture the 2015 Class A state championship. He set the school’s all-time scoring record with over 2,500 points.

Boswell received a regents degree with a minor in mathematics in 2020 from West Liberty. He earned his graduate degree in sport management with a concentration in strategic sport analysis from Cal in 2021. Boswell later completed a post-graduate certificate from Cal in sport psychology the following year.
