A former four-year starter in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), John Owens enters his second season as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program.

Owens was a two-year starter for head coach Bill Brown at Cal U from 2005-07 after transferring from Bloomsburg. While with the Vulcans, he averaged 8.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in two years. Owens was the starting point guard in the 2006-07 season when Cal U made a NCAA Tournament appearance after winning its fourth PSAC West title in a six-year span. As a senior, the Philadelphia native led the team and ranked among the league leaders in both assists and steals.

Prior to his time with the Vulcans, he was a two-year starter for the Huskies in the PSAC Eastern Division. As a freshman, he finished second on the team in scoring, while leading the team in assists. The following year, he scored a team-high 12.7 points per game and collected 3.7 assists per game.

Owens earned his undergraduate degree from Cal U in 2007 and completed his master’s degree in psychology in December 2009.
