A former player in both divisions within the PSAC, David Carney Jr. enters his third season on the Cal U coaching staff and will be working with outside linebackers and special teams.
In 2019, the Vulcans led the country in rushing defense at 56.5 yards per game and limited opponents to 17.5 points per game. Cal U featured a pair of All-PSAC West linebackers that season, plus linebacker Noah Dillow was selected the PSAC West Freshman of the Year.
Carney joined the Vulcans for his senior year after previously playing three seasons at Bloomsburg. In 2018, he played in all 11 games as the long snapper at Cal U. Carney appeared in over 20 games with the Huskies from 2015-17 and was also named captain of the special teams.
Following his senior season, Carney participated in both The National Bowl and The Spirit of America Bowl. The National Bowl was held in December in Daytona Beach, Florida, and he was a member of the American Team led by Matt Diniak, who served as the head coach of a professional arena team in Arkansas. The following month, Carney played in The Spirt of America Bowl in Salem, Virginia.
A native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Carney also previously participated in The Spring League Showcase in California.
Carney earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Bloomsburg in 2018 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Cal U in teaching.
