California claims home win over Salem

Vulcans use six different pitchers in the victory; Evans, Salvatori combine for five hits with two homers

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 16) – The California (PA) baseball team collected a dozen hits while claiming a 9-5 win over Salem at EQT Park in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (25-7) have reached the 25-win mark for the seventh-consecutive spring and the 24th time in the last 25 seasons under head coach Mike Conte (excluding 2020).
• Cal has won 17 of the last 18 meetings in the series with Salem dating back to the 2014 campaign.
• The Vulcans, which used a modified lineup, scored nine runs in the victory for the 16th time this season.
• Senior right fielder James Salvatori tallied two hits with a solo homer and three RBI, while junior center fielder Connor Evans collected three hits with a solo homer and two runs scored.
• Sophomore second baseman Caleb Collins finished with two hits, one RBI and two runs scored, while junior designated hitter Colin Patterson posted two hits and one run scored.
• The Tigers held a 2-0 lead before the Vulcans scored four runs in the bottom of the second.
• Salvatori belted his fourth homer of the year before Cal later scored on an RBI single by Collins, a wild pitch and a ground-out.
• Salem answered with three runs in the third before Cal tied the score in the bottom half on a two-out RBI single by Salvatori, 5-5.
• The Vulcans reclaimed the lead on an infield single by senior third baseman Nathan Meeks in the fourth and added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
• Evans delivered a solo homer, his second of the spring, to start the fifth before Cal added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
• Cal used six different pitchers in the contest with none working more than 2.2 innings and 55 pitches.
• Freshman Colin Watson (4-0) was credited with the victory after working a scoreless sixth inning.

• The Vulcans begin their series against defending-NCAA regional champion IUP tomorrow, Thursday, April 18, with a doubleheader in Indiana, Pennsylvania, starting at 1 p.m.
• The Crimson Hawks advanced to the NCAA National Semifinals in 2024 and boast the longest active winning streak in the PSAC at 10 games.
