DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 6) – The trio of senior
Jackson Miller, sophomore
Josh Bryson and sophomore
Ryan Sluk combined to record a no-hitter in Game 2, as the California (PA) baseball team split a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican on Thursday evening with a 4-1 loss in Game 1 and a 5-0 victory in Game 2.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (6-2) recorded their first combined no-hitter in at least two decades while in Florida.
• Cal previously accomplished a no-hitter three times over the last 18 years (Randy Sturgill 2008; Jack Dennis, 2014; Dylan Brosky 2022).
• The Vulcans and Panthers previously met on spring trips to North Carolina in both 2019 and 2020.
GAME 1
• ODU earned the victory despite collecting just three base hits over six innings.
• Redshirt junior
Roman Gill (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (all unearned) on three hits in 4.0 innings (76 pitches).
• Freshman
Colin Watson logged 2.0 innings of scoreless relief without yielding a hit.
• The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by junior right fielder
Connor Evans.
• ODU capitalized on multiple errors in the third by scoring three unearned runs.
• The Panthers added another run in the bottom of the fourth following another two errors by the Vulcans.
• Senior second baseman
Santino Marra collected two hits and one run scored.
GAME 2
• Miller (1-0) made his first start of the season and issued three walks over 5.0 no-hit innings (70 pitches).
• Bryson and Sluk both worked 1.0 inning of no-hit relief and combined for four strikeouts.
• Cal took a 1-0 lead in the first before adding another run in the bottom of the fourth.
• The Vulcans scored on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to extend the lead to a 4-0 margin.
• Bryson loaded the bases on three walks in the sixth before a called third strike ended the inning.
• Sophomore center fielder
Ikon Jones collected a two-out RBI infield single in the bottom of the inning, 5-0.
• Jones finished with two hits, one RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff spot.
NEXT
• Cal returns to the diamond in Florida tomorrow, Friday, March 7, when it faces Ashland at 3:45 p.m.
