LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (March 22) – The Vulcans rallied from a nine-run deficit on Saturday afternoon to earn a 13-12 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action before Game 2 was postponed due to weather conditions.
NOTES
• California (15-2, 3-0) clinched the series victory over Lock Haven after sweeping the home doubleheader yesterday.
• The Vulcans scored a combined 42 runs in the three wins over the Bald Eagles this weekend, tallying at least 13 runs in each game.
• Cal also extended its winning streak to 10 games on Saturday to mark the longest for the program since the 2010 campaign.
• Senior first baseman
Payton Conte registered two hits and five RBI on Saturday, and finished with 14 RBI in the three victories over the Bald Eagles.
• Senior third baseman
Nathan Meeks scored three runs after reaching on two walks and a solo homer, while sophomore center fielder
Ikon Jones tallied two hits, one RBI, three runs and two walks.
• Lock Haven scored three runs in the first before Cal tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in the second and a homer by Meeks in the third.
• The Bald Eagles totaled nine runs on nine hits – only one for extra-bases – in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-3 lead.
• Cal scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before rallying to score seven runs in the sixth on three hits, five walks and one fielding error.
• The Vulcans drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded before Conte delivered a two-run single and senior left fielder
Ryan Callahan followed with an RBI single.
• Conte later delivered the game-winning, two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh.
• Lock Haven opened the bottom of the inning with a single and advanced the tying run into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
• Junior
Jake Kramer then retired the next two batters to force the Bald Eagles to strand the runner at second base.
• Kramer posted his fourth save of the season and is now tied with Adam Zipko of Millersville (2011-14) for fourth all-time in PSAC history with 20 saves.
• Sophomore
Josh Bryson (1-0) earned the win after working 3.0 innings of relief (40 pitches).
NEXT
• Cal returns to action on Tuesday, March 25, when it hosts Point Park in non-conference action at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pennsylvania, at 1 p.m.
• The Pioneers are first-year members of the MEC after posting 42 wins last spring while advancing the NAIA National Championship Tournament.
