California posts win at Gannon, 34-17

Vulcans place second in PSAC West standings; Cal finishes with 200-yard advantage in total offense

ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 4) – The Vulcans rushed for 250 yards for a consecutive week and scored three rushing touchdowns while posting a 34-17 victory at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The California (PA) football team improves to 7-2 this season and finish second in the PSAC West standings with a 6-1 league record.
• The Golden Knights fall to 5-5 overall behind a 5-2 mark in divisional play.
• The Vulcans hold a 12-2 record in the all-time series with the Golden Knights and have won all eight meetings at McConnell Family Stadium (formerly University Field).
• Cal entered the weekend ranked sixth in the NCAA regional rankings and figure to climb this week with a pair of top-five teams suffering losses on Saturday.

GAME ACTION
• The Vulcans took a 7-0 lead on a 29-yard touchdown run by junior Isaiah Cameron with 4:23 left in the first quarter.
• Gannon trimmed the deficit late in the second quarter with a 27-yard field goal at the 3:49-mark.
• Cal answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Davis Black to sophomore wide receiver Eric Willis III with 25 seconds remaining before halftime, 14-3.
• The Golden Knights cut the deficit to 14-10 on a 36-yard touchdown pass with 12:13 remaining in the third quarter after the previous drive by the Vulcans was halted with an interception in the end zone.
• Cal responded on the ensuing drive with a 20-yard touchdown run by freshman Bobbie Boyd, Jr. at the 7:43-mark to take a 21-10 lead.
• The Vulcans recovered a fumble in Gannon territory less than a minute later to setup a two-yard touchdown run by Black with 4:17 left in the third quarter, 28-10.
• Cal extended the lead to 31-10 on the initial play of the fourth quarter with a 35-yard field goal by junior Anthony Beitko.
• Gannon followed with a seven-yard touchdown pass with 10:31 remaining to trim the deficit to 31-17.
• The Vulcans sealed the victory with a five-plus minute drive that was capped with a 27-yard field goal by Beitko at the 5:11-mark.

STATS/NOTES
• The Vulcans finished with 250 rushing yards on 44 attempts with three touchdowns.
• Boyd led the team with 100 rushing yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.
• Junior Eric McKan III finished with 86 rushing yards on 11 attempts and Cameron added 48 yards on five carries with one touchdown.
• Black posted 200 passing yards on 12-of-22 attempts with one touchdown and one interception.
• Willis finished with 70 receiving yards on five catches, including one touchdown.
• Freshman D'Avay Johnson tallied four receptions for a team-leading 114 yards.
• Senior linebacker Matt Tobey paced the team with 11 tackles (five solo), including 0.5 sack.
• Junior linebacker John Hutchinson posted eight stops (seven solo), while redshirt freshman defensive back Keith Charney was credited with five tackles and four pass break-ups.
• Freshman defensive lineman Sedrick Vessah registered 2.0 sacks and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Julien Laventure tallied 2.0 TFL in the victory.
• Cal limited Gannon sophomore Donny Marcus to only 38 rushing yards after he averaged nearly 150 yards over the last five weeks.
• The Vulcans finished with nearly a 200-yard advantage in total offense with 450 yards on 66 plays.
• Cal posted five sacks in the victory on Saturday.

NEXT
• The Vulcans close out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they travel to face regionally-ranked East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. The Warriors were slotted fourth in the rankings before suffering their second loss of the year on Saturday.
