Vulcans suffer loss at Bowie State, 74-61

Cal held to just seven field goals in first half; Terrell led team in scoring, set season high in points

BOWIE, Md. (Nov. 27) – Playing on the road for the first time this season, the No. 20 California (PA) women's basketball team was unable to overcome a double-digit deficit in the first quarter on Monday evening in a 74-61 loss at Bowie State in non-conference action.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans fall to 4-1 this season while playing their second-straight CIAA opponent.
• The Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall after making their home debut on Monday.
• Cal and Bowie State have met in three-straight seasons after previously not playing in a decade.

STATS
• Redshirt senior Dejah Terrell led the team with a season-high 15 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
• She also tallied six rebounds and three blocks in the losing effort.
• Junior Iyahnna Williams posted 13 points on six-of-eight from the floor and seven rebounds (four offensive) off the bench.
• Fellow junior Allycia Harris also tallied seven rebounds despite playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble.
• Freshman Nina Shaw finished with seven points, seven assists and two steals on Monday.

GAME ACTION
• Bowie State raced out to a 13-2 lead at the 6:16-mark of the first quarter after making its opening five shots of the game.
• The Bulldogs scored seven of the final eight points in the quarter to take a 24-9 lead.
• Bowie State extended the lead as many as 17 points in the second quarter before taking a 38-23 lead into the break.
• The Vulcans scored the initial six points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to single digits at 39-29 with 6:17 left.
• Bowie State responded with a 13-2 run to stretch the lead to 20 points, 51-31, at the 3:24-mark of the third quarter.
• Cal later managed to work the deficit to as few as 12 points in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter.
• Senior Jayla Irvin scored a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds and three steals.
• Junior Anii Harris finished with 19 points, four assists and three steals.

NEXT
• The Vulcans open PSAC Crossover play on Friday, Dec. 1, when they travel to face Millersville at 3 p.m.
