CLARION, Pa. (April 30) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team completed the series sweep of Clarion on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, posing 6-2 and 4-1 victories in a road twinbill.
With the sweep, the Vulcans improve to 29-14 this season behind a 14-10 mark in divisional play. Cal U enters the final weekend of the regular season in a tie for third place in the PSAC West standings. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 10-32 overall with a 5-19 record in league action.
In Game 1, Cal U broke a 2-2 tie by scoring four runs on three hits and two walks in the top of the seventh. Redshirt freshman second baseman
Santino Marra (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while freshman center fielder
Adam Crawford (North Fayette, Pa./West Allegheny) drew three walks from the leadoff spot.
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by senior designated hitter
Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes). Cal U added to the lead on an RBI single by senior left fielder
Mike Landry (Jamison, Pa./La Salle) in the top of the fourth. The Golden Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer by designated hitter Tim Irons to the score at 2-2.
In the seventh, McCaskey started the inning with a walk before advancing to third on a single by senior third baseman
Louden Conte (California, Pa./California). After a walk loaded the bases, Marra delivered a two-run single to center field before a sacrifice bunt advanced two runners into scoring position. Senior
Justin Stewart (Butler, Pa./Butler) then collected a two-run, pinch-hit single to left field to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Clarion looked to counter in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles before Cal U made a pitching change to senior
Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler). He then retired the next three batters in order, as the Golden Eagles stranded runners on second and third.
Junior
Devin Foster (Davidsville, Pa./Conemaugh Township) earned the win to improve to 6-1 this season. He allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits while setting a career high with seven strikeouts in 6.0-plus innings (81 pitches). Gumto was credited with his second save of the year while making his ninth appearance.
In Game 2, McCaskey tossed his third career complete game to improve to 6-0 this spring. He yielded one run (earned) on three hits and one walk over 7.0 innings (89 pitches) while posting nine strikeouts. Clarion starter Michael Proios (2-3) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (all earned) on six hits in 4.2 innings (86 pitches).
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI single before the Vulcans tied the score on an error in the third inning. Cal U broke the tie by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth, 4-1. Junior right fielder
Colby Rockacy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) started the rally with a double before advancing to third when Landry reached on a wild pitch. Crawford then collected an RBI single before Landry scored on a sacrifice fly. McCaskey followed with a two-out RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
Rockacy went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one walk, while Landy finished 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Cal U is set to return to action on Tuesday, May 3, with a non-conference game against Salem held at Roadman Park with first pitch set for 2 p.m. The contest marks the first game played on campus since the 2013 season.
