Cal U drops contest against Walsh, 6-5

Crawford, Venezia collect two hits in contest; Vulcans commit three errors, allow two unearned runs

WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 4) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team scored four runs late in the game on Friday afternoon before stranding the game-tying run on third base in the ninth inning while opening the series against Walsh (Ohio) with a 6-5 loss at Wild Things Park in non-conference action.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 5-2 this season while playing their fourth game against a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, Walsh improves to 1-2 overall after being swept in a season-opening doubleheader at Seton Hill last weekend.

Cal U trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the eighth before scoring three runs on three hits. Redshirt freshman Santino Marra (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) started the rally with a pinch-hit triple before scoring on an infield single by senior second baseman Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler). Senior right field Patrick Brogan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) later delivered a two-run double with two outs to trim the deficit to 6-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, senior third baseman Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a ground-out. The Vulcans later placed the game-tying run on base when senior Nick Serafino (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) reached on a two-out fielding error. Venezia followed with a RBI single up the middle before Cal U left runners on the corners.

Senior Dylan Brosky (East Millsboro, Pa./Brownsville) suffered the loss to fall to 2-1 this season. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walk in 6.0 innings (93 pitches). Brosky also tallied six strikeouts on Friday and paces the team with 21 strikeouts in 18.0 innings pitched this season. Freshman Roman Gill (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) and sophomore transfer Troy Lincavage (Ambler, Pa./Legend (Colo.)) both worked 1.0 inning of scoreless relief in the contest.

The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a solo homer by Conte, his second of the year. Walsh responded with a pair of homers in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Right fielder Joey Holiga, an All-G-MAC Second-Team selection last spring, tied the score with a solo homer before left fielder Austin Marko later belted a two-run homer with two outs.

Walsh scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth before scoring two runs with two outs in the eighth. The Cavaliers held a 5-1 lead in the eighth before scoring an insurance run on a two-out error.

Venezia went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored from the leadoff spot. Freshman first baseman Adam Crawford (North Fayette, Pa./West Allegheny) collected two hits, while Conte finished with a solo homer and two runs scored.

Walsh starting pitcher Drew Saunier (1-0) earned the victory after yielding one run (earned) on five hits in 6.0 innings (78 pitches) while posting seven strikeouts. He was an All-G-MAC Second-Team honoree last season after posting a 5-2 record with 67 strikeouts in over 60 innings. Junior Cole Brogan registered the save behind 3.0 innings of relief in the contest.

Cal U continues its series against Walsh tomorrow, Saturday, March 5, with a doubleheader at Wild Things Park, starting at 12 p.m.
