Men's Basketball wins at Seton Hill, 70-58

Pegram moves to eighth on school's scoring list; Vulcans have won 10 of their last 12 games

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 16) – Senior Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) recorded a consecutive 30-point game on Wednesday night to help the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team earn a 70-58 victory at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 18-6 this season behind a 13-5 record in league play. The Vulcans have already secured a second-straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament with four games left in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 3-21 overall with a 3-16 mark in conference action.

Pegram scored 30 points on 9-of-19 shooting, including four-of-nine from beyond the arc, and eight-of-nine from the free-throw line in the victory. He surpassed Brent Kincaid and Kenney Toomer, both starters on NCAA Final Four Teams at Cal U, for eighth on the schools' all-time scoring list with 1,518 points. Pegram also collected four rebounds and two assists while playing all 40 minutes on Wednesday.

Junior Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) posted 14 points (all first half) behind three-of-six from long range and five rebounds. Sophomore Philip Alston (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) and senior Preston Boswell (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) both scored eight points in the victory. Alston, who was held to a season low in points, led the team with 13 rebounds (four offensive), while Boswell added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman Keith Palek III (Woodbine, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) tied his season high with six assists and finished with five rebounds.

Cal U opened the game on a 14-3 run behind eight points from Collins in the initial five minutes. The Griffins countered with back-to-back three-pointers to help cut the deficit to 18-11 at the 12:20-mark. The Vulcans responded with a 10-4 rally, all by Collins and Pegram, to stretch the lead to 28-15 with 7:52 left in the first half. Seton Hill mounted a 10-3 run over four-plus minutes to trim the deficit to 31-25 at the 2:59-mark. Pegram converted a three-pointer before the Griffins scored right at the halftime buzzer to enter the break trailing 34-27.

Alston scored on the team's opening possession in the second half after being held scoreless in the first half. The Griffins went on a 10-4 run to work the deficit to 40-37 with 15:58 left to play.  The teams traded three-pointers before Cal U mounted a 17-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 18 points, 60-42, at the 7:50-mark. The Vulcans shot 8-of-12 from the floor over the six-minute run, while the Griffins made just one-of-seven from the field and committed three turnovers. Seton Hill responded with a 9-2 rally and later trailed 64-54 before being limited to one field goal over the last two minutes of the contest.

Cal U finished the game shooting 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor, including 7-of-20 (35.0 percent) from long range. Meanwhile, Seton Hill shot at a 36.9 clip (24-of-65) from the field went just 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from the free-throw line. The Griffins held a 44-39 rebounding advantage while both teams scored at least 30 points in the paint.

Seton Hill sophomore Ryan Meis led the team with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting and added four rebounds and four assists. Junior Jimmy Moon registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Sean Dillon totaled 10 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds in the loss.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19, when they host Clarion in divisional play at 3 p.m.
